PGWOCADE was built around the experience and vision of the founder, Dr. Jackline Tung’ombe, who looked back when she was one of the 7 young girls out of 322 to graduate ordinary level in her class. The 322 girls did not lack ability, but the community did not prioritise their education. Girls were married off instead of sent to school, and child marriage and teenage pregnancy pushed one girl after another out of the classroom. Refusing to accept that this was normal, Dr. Jackline and 4 volunteers of began a movement in Tanzania to promote girls’ education, speak out against child marriage and open access to youth-friendly health services. On 16th April 2018, the movement was formally registered under Tanzania’s NGO Act, 2002, as PRACTICES FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (PGWOCADE). PGWOCADE works throughout Tanzania. PGWOCADE is a female led, led by a team of youth staffs and volunteers working alongside government, schools, health facilities and communities.
