A society integrating girls and women in the national development agenda.
Our story, ourpurpose.
Practices For Girls and Women Career Development Foundation is a female-led Tanzanian NGO empowering adolescent girls and young women to shape healthy, educated and economically secure futures.
Built from one girl’s story, for every girl.
PGWOCADE was built around the experience and vision of our founder, Dr. Jackline Tung’ombe, who was one of only 7 girls out of 322 to graduate ordinary level in her class.
Those 322 girls did not lack ability. Their community did not prioritize their education. Girls were married off instead of sent to school, while child marriage and teenage pregnancy pushed one girl after another out of the classroom.
Refusing to accept this as normal, Dr. Jackline and four volunteers began a movement to promote girls’ education, speak out against child marriage and expand youth-friendly health services. On 16 April 2018, the movement was formally registered as PGWOCADE.
Today, PGWOCADE is a female-led organization working alongside government, schools, health facilities and communities.
To empower and promote girls and women in realization of their goals through capacity building, development support, access to education, health and nutrition.

Know→Access→Protect→Acquire→Lead→Innovate
We have established a system to guide our interventions. Each stage strengthens the next.
Know
Girls understand their bodies, their health and their rights.
Access
Girls reach education and health services, and stay in school or return to it.
Protect
Girls are shielded from child marriage, early pregnancy and violence.
Acquire
Young women gain the skills, income and capital to support themselves.
Lead
Young women become mentors, decision makers and advocates for the next girl.
Innovate
Girls and young women use digital tools to learn about their health, build careers and grow their income, so no one is left behind in a connected world.
A girl who understands her body is better protected from early pregnancy.
A girl who stays in school is less exposed to child marriage.
A young woman with an income has power over her own choices.
A woman who has walked this path becomes the mentor and leader the next girl needs.
Digital tools expand opportunities to learn, build careers and grow income so no girl or young woman is left behind.
Too many girls lose their futures before they can shape them.
Because of these challenges, girls drop out of school, their health deteriorates and their general welfare is put at risk.
PGWOCADE exists to eradicate these challenges through programs and projects. Girls and young women are engaged at every stage: design, decision-making and implementation.
We help them understand their bodies and rights, access education and youth-friendly health services, stay protected from child marriage, early pregnancy and violence, acquire skills and income, and lead so they can mentor the next girl.
We also advocate for legal and policy change and strengthen the provision of youth-friendly health services in health facilities.
Our goal is a future where every girl can thrive—healthy, educated, empowered and able to contribute to strong and inclusive communities.
From volunteers to a registered foundation.
What started as a handful of volunteers in Rukwa has grown into an organization running projects across Rukwa and Songwe regions.
Dr. Jackline Tung’ombe and four volunteers start a movement for girls’ education, against child marriage and for youth-friendly health services.
PGWOCADE is registered on 16 April under Tanzania’s NGO Act, 2002. Registration No. 00NGO/0009617.
We work with government, schools, health facilities and communities through projects that put girls and young women at the centre.
