About the project

The Pamoja Project worked to end sexual and gender-based violence in Sumbawanga District Council among girls aged 15–17, both in and out of school. It combined awareness campaigns, education on consent, gender equality and respectful relationships, empowerment workshops and access to counselling services.

The opportunity

Girls thrive when knowledge, confidence and community protection work together.

Sexual and gender-based violence can silence girls and limit their education, health and future choices. Pamoja equipped girls with language and confidence to identify abuse and seek support while engaging schools, leaders and stakeholders to create safer environments.

Project design

Connected action. Lasting change.

The project connects four mutually reinforcing areas to address the challenge as a whole.

01

Consent education

Age-appropriate learning helps girls understand consent, boundaries and respectful relationships.

02

Support and counselling

Access to counselling creates a pathway for girls who need confidential care and support.

03

Girl-led confidence

Empowerment workshops build the confidence to speak out against violence and protect personal rights.

04

Community protection

Schools, leaders and stakeholders work together to make girls’ environments safer.

How the project is delivered

Change grows through practical, locally grounded action.

Participants remain at the center of the process—building knowledge, services, skills and relationships that respond to the realities of their lives.
